The Smith College Festival of Sound and Space focuses on improvisation through the fusion of live electronics and violin to create a new and unique “sonic stew” in the work of Sam Pluta and Jim Altieri’s “sum and difference”.
Northampton, MA. The Smith College Festival of Sound and Space presents an evening of improvised music with Sam Pluta and Jim Altieri. "Sum and Difference" fuses live electronics and violin into an hour-long performance featuring microtonal drones, noise, custom electronic interfaces, and more.
Sam Pluta and Jim Altieri have been improvising together in various formations for the past six years. As founding members of the improv quintet GBL, Pluta and Altieri merged microtonal violin drones with electronic noise to create a new and unique sonic stew. In 2011 they combined with trumpeter Peter Evans to create the album sum and difference, released on Carrier Records.
Sam Pluta is a New York City-based composer and improviser working in the fields of acoustic and electronic music. He is Technical Director for the Wet Ink Ensemble, a new music group dedicated to the performance of new works by young composers as well as the best works of the American and European avant-garde. He has been commissioned and premiered by Wet Ink Ensemble, Yarn/Wire, ICE, Timetable Percussion, RIOT Trio, So Percussion, Dave Eggar, and Prism Saxophone Quartet and has performed internationally as a laptop soloist and chamber musician. As a founding member of the improvising quartet GBL and performing with groups like the Peter Evans Quintet, he has focused in recent years on fusing the worlds of acoustic and electronic instruments through improvisation. A devoted pedagogue, aside from his teaching duties as faculty fellow at Columbia University, he holds the John Plude Faculty Chair in Computer Musicianship at the Walden School. His music is released on quiet design and Carrier Records, a label he runs with Jeff Snyder and David Franzson.
Jim Altieri loves listening. Through his music and software, he tries to share this love with other listeners. Based in New York City, Jim is an active composer, violinist, and accordionist. His own music often uses the harmonies and rhythms of the harmonic series and explores the relationship between attention and awareness. He is a founding member of GBL and plays violin and accordion in the folk-rock band Tatters and Rags.
The Smith College Festival of Sound & Space: four shows featuring artists who explore space and sound through their innovative performances. The concerts will all take place in Helen Hills Hills Chapel on the campus of Smith College.
The 2011–12 series has a special focus on improvisation, the practice of which — particularly when presented within a space designed for liturgy and ritual — speaks directly to our notions of space in a figurative sense through our perception of emotional space, metaphorical space, and musical/dramatic structure. The process of creating music in real time creates an experience of exploration that is shared by the performers and the audience, with the physical space acting as an additional collaborator.
The artists on this series approach concepts of space and collaboration in a variety of ways, with two shows dedicated entirely to improvisatory practices (sum and difference & Curiosity is Gravity), and with aspects of the other two shows ( (( ( PHONATION ) )) and Greg Brown) incorporating improvistory practices as well.
Greg Brown of the Smith College Music Dept. serves as founding artistic director and organizer. This festival is produced in collaboration with the Smith College Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, Jennifer Walters, Dean.

Bev Grant is a veteran social activist, feminist, labor singer/songwriter, "cultural worker" from Park Slope Brooklyn, where she has lived for over 30 years. She is the co-creator of a women's labor history multi-media presentation entitled "We Were There!" and has recorded five albums, including a companion cd and songbook for the show, called "We Were There!", a solo cd entitled "IN TUNE", a 7-song ep with her current group, Bev Grant & the Dissident Daughters, called “CHEEKY WOMAN”, and two albums with her former band, "Human Condition". John Flynn:
Singer-songwriter John Flynn draws from a significant body of work, ranging from his early country offerings to story songs, love songs, songs for kids, funny songs, songs of social justice and meditations on loss, tolerance, faith and hope.
The 54 year-old former Nashville staff songwriter and father of four spurned touring when his children were young, but as the kids grew older superlatives began to welcome their dad's arrival to the national folk stage. In 2005, Arlo Guthrie invited John on the historic "Train to New Orleans" tour following Hurricane Katrina. And Kris Kristofferson recited the lyrics to John’s song “Without You with Me” at Stephen Bruton's funeral. Ramblin' Jack Elliott himself has called Flynn the undiscovered “John Lennon of the plasma generation"!
John resides in the Brandywine area of Northern Delaware with his wife Beth, his kids, and his running partner, Chief, the world's most exuberant Frisbee-catching German shepherd. He has a new CD coming out this fall called "The End of the Beginning". The title cut is a duet with Kris Kristofferson.

Annie Patterson:
Annie is a music educator and professional singer. She has performed as a singer-songwriter at coffeehouses, clubs and folk festivals. She has been a jazz vocalist and performed for twenty years with the swing bands "Big Nite Out" and Girls from Mars, performing widely at folk festivals, swing dances, swing camps, weddings and clubs through out the Northeast and is on three swing recordings by these bands. She currently substitutes as a vocalist with the Northampton based swing band, The O-Tones.
Together with her husband, Peter Blood, she has create a completely unique song collection entitled Rise Up Singing. Their book contains a wonderful mix of 1200 songs from Beatles to Broadway, from spirituals to carols, and from kids songs to songs of peace and justice. Annie is producer and chief vocalist for the series of teaching recordings that accompany the songbook. The 2011 Montague Soapbox Derby will be held on Saturday afternoon, September 17th, in Unity Park, Turners Falls. Race Applications are available on the website, as are the Race Rules. Deadline for entry is Wednesday, August 31st.
Due to the overwhelming enthusiasm for the race last year, and the potential to have more racers than can be handled, the committee is capping the number of entrants to 100. If you plan to enter you are urged to get your application in early. Racers who raced last year may apply for the same racer number, and may also enter the same cart if they wish. Racer fee: $25.
I'm looking for a person who is interested in working in my naturopathic practice, doing front desk reception. Responsibilities would include: answering the telephone, taking messages, calling back, booking appointments and doing some basic accounting and book keeping. The first annual Mutton and Mead Medieval Festival is coming to Turners Falls on the grounds of the Millers Falls Rod and Gun Club on Saturday, June 18, 2011. The festival, traditionally known as a Renaissance Faire, will bring together fun, food, and entertainment with a medieval flair. This will be a day for everyone, kids, teens, and adults alike. Dressing up in period costumes is not required, but it will heighten the experience for everyone.
The theme for the inaugural year is Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest, "Thieves of Honor." Many characters from the legend, including Robin and his band of Merry Men, will be making appearances in the woods around the faire along with a varied assortment of entertainers, craftspeople, and other vendors from across New England. There will also be jousting, eagles and falcons, knife throwing, archery demonstrations and contests, various food vendors selling contemporary and period-authentic foods, as well as artisan crafts and medieval merchandise.
Be transported through time
So travel back in time with us to the early 13th Century. The Mutton and Mead Tavern is holding their annual summer festival, and collecting food for the poor. The shire folk are worried the Sheriff of Nottingham will come and exact tax payment on the collected food, but are confident that Robin Hood will swoop in and save the day!

As a public expression of solidarity with the thousands of Japanese workers and residents affected by the still worsening nuclear disaster in Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture, there will be a solemn, peaceful vigil in front of the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant on Governor Hunt Road in Vernon, Vermont, this Sunday, March 20, at 1:00 pm.
In addition to expressing concern for the suffering of the Japanese people, the vigilers will continue calling for the closure of Vermont Yankee, a 39-year-old, accident-plagued facility of the same or very similar age and design (Mark 1 Boiling Water Reactor made by General Electric) as the failed nuclear reactors in Japan.
Vigil organizers have suggested that those who plan to attend wear black, bring a sign or banner in keeping with the purpose of the vigil, and park in the parking lot of the Vernon Elementary School across from the plant. All are welcome.

Peace Talks: Art is the Children's Voice. An exhibition presented by the committee for a Leverett Peace Commission. The show includes the work of Claudia Lefko titles the Iraqi Children's Art Exchange, as well as art created by the students from the Vacation Peace Project lead by Sarah Pirtle entitled Making Peace with Children. A reception will be held on Sunday, March 6th from 4-7pm. The artists will speak @ 5pm followed by a mini concert by Sarah Pirtle.
Please come enjoy art, music, refreshments, and support the committee for the Leverett Peace Commission. This is a family friendly reception so bring the kids to participate in an art exchange with children in Iraq.

With the power of their delivery, Magpie is well known for their performances of hard-hitting topical songs. Terry's voice is a truly impressive instrument, not only because of its natural power, but also because of her versatility. She is a gifted singer of jazz and blues in the tradition of Connie Boswell and Billie Holiday, but is equally comfortable with the subtle beauty of traditional folk and contemporary songs. Add to this her uncanny ability to find the perfect harmony line, and, in a powerful blend of their two voices, you have a real treat for the ear. As if this weren't enough, Terry is also an excellent player of the harmonica, mandolin, fretted dulcimer, and rhythm guitar.
Greg is an outstanding guitarist whose fingerstyle approach owes a lot to his heroes, guitar legends such as Reverend Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Nick Lucas, Phil Ochs, and Rolly Brown. His playing is the solid basis of Magpie's sound, providing whatever is called for, whether it be a hard-driving rhythm, or a ringing lyrical beauty. From a slow Scots air or a plaintive ballad to a rollicking ragtime blues or infectious swing, Greg covers it all. His high baritone voice has equal range and his captivating interpretation gives power and beauty to the full spectrum, from growling blues, to a Chilean lament, to a sweet croon.
Terry and Greg are internationally known for their musical work in the environmental movement. Their musical work has supported the work of such notable groups as National Audubon Society, National Wildlife Federation, the National Wildlife Refuge System, the National Park Service, and Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. Earth Day 1998 found them performing at Harpers Ferry National Park where their well-known anthem, "We Belong to the Earth" was a perfect finale to a speech by President Clinton.

Mutton and Mead, Montague's Medieval Festival, seeks Actors, Singers, Dancers, Minstrels, and other creative types at an audition and open house on Sunday, January 23rd, 2011, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Montague Grange hall, for "THIEVES OF HONOR" a Robin Hood-themed Renaissance Faire to be held on June 18th in Turners Falls, MA.
Actors should come with a two-minute monologue and be prepared to participate in some improvisational activities. Not looking for a major role? We are also seeking extras for "depth and color" and will provide training. If you sing or play an instrument please bring it and a song to present.
Not an actor, but still interested in helping bring our medieval village to life? Mutton and Mead is also seeking volunteers, crafts-people, merchants, theater crew, designers and carpenters, independent acts, interns and staff. Just contact us or stop by on audition day. There are several Managerial spots available as well, for those who like to work on these types of events.
Are you some other creative type? Our hope is that Mutton and Mead will provide a venue for the community. We welcome your ideas on how we can make that happen. We hope to see you or hear from you too.
