hi
lived in leverett some years ago
and frequented the coop
trying to remember the name of a particular kind of candy that was sold there
i think it's greek, but not sure
i think the name started with an H, name was perhaps 7-9 letters long
sold in pieces around an inch and a half by two and a half
was very sweet, melted in your mouth
no chocolate
kind of like cotton candy but dense
I got the bill, too, and immediately called while it was still in my hand. The woman that answered was courteous and even pleasant, and laughed when she said "wait, let me guess, you're a Leverett COOP member." All I had to do was give her my coop member number and the matter was settled, as far as I can tell.
The only downsides I can see to using Amerigas are (a) that they don't have a set day of the week for my area. I have to call several days in advance and hope it's a Tuesday or a Wednesday this week, and (b) they don't allow for leaving a check under the hood of the tank. You have to give a credit card number over the phone before they even come.
The upside is that during the initial year the gas was $1 per gallon cheaper than Rice, and is still cheaper.
If you are a Leverett Village Coop Member who participates in the LP Gas purchase agreement be aware that Amerigas has sent out statements to all members stating that there is a $112 dollar charge for renewal of something called "Amerilock Contract Renewal Enrollment Fee" as of July 1, 2011. In other words they are trying to charge you as an individual customer for the coop's negotiated cooperative fuel rate.
THIS IS NOT CORRECT: A Call to Amerigas at 978-249-3633 will confirm that if you send in a photo copy of your coop membership card and request deletion of the bill it they will delete the charges.
This seems a bit lame to me. Amerigas should be provided with a list of coop members and delete the bill themselves to all members of the Leverett Village Coop who use their services not just the ones smart and ornery enough to raise the issue.
Also be aware that the Amerigas is charging an usurious $35 minimum late fee as January 1, 2011. In short Amerigas Corporate is taking the position that poor people use LP Gas and are to be taken advantage of at every at every turn.
My suggestion to the Leverett Village Coop steering committee is that we negotiate a program with a local gas fitter to supply and install user owned LP gas tanks large enough to contain six months or preferably a years worth of LP Gas fuel.
The LVC can then negotiate a competitive spot price for LPGas so users can buy enough fuel for six months or a year at lower rates. Fill your tank once a year when it's cheep and forget about running out until next year.
Are you missing a mid-sized tabby cat with a white muzzle? We've got one hanging around near the Red Brook/Sawmill River confluence. It cries by our window but won't come in and it's C-O-L-D outside! Call 367-9352

The Greenfield Distorter article pointed out that it was the artist who opted to remove the painting and that it soon sold for four figures somewhere. Paul, the manager, did not intend to take down the art. Soooo, it's the pastor who is left with the shame for his over reaction. I'm told he may have been most offended by the fact that Jesus's penis was showing, but hey, tell that to countless artists from the 16th century. Jeez!
My name is Dave, I work most mornings behind the register at the Coop, amongst many other responsibilities. I do my best to be friendly and welcoming, and enjoy the company, conversation, news and insight from the truly diverse community that Leverett is.
I am also the one who designed Adrian Montagano's (The Artist in Question) website, www.portalsoftransmission.com, and am honored to have him as a client, and know him as a friend. I am an admirer and fan of his artwork, and was excited to have his work with me everyday at work. Adrian is an honest and respectful individual, and it's a joy to share his company.
I was also present when the Pastor arrived, and gave his speech and Demanded the coop take down the painting. Currently on the clock, I had to bite my tongue. I did not understand how a Baptist could be upset at was obviously a statement regarding Romes treatment of Christ. I was confused when he said "No one would ever do a painting about Buddha like this." A a matter of fact, Adrian has a piece called "Buddha Never Sleeps", which, is by far, a much more brutal image than the one portrayed in "Golgotha". The Pastor simply came in, and spoke out loud, inside the coop, and proselytized. He took pictures of the painting, as well of people who were sitting near it, with out their consent. It was a peaceful morning in the coop, where people were reading their papers, eating their breakfast, and enjoying their coffee. He, not that painting, disturbed that peace. I found his conduct childish.
The Pastor could have just as easily walked in, and politely asked to see the General Manager, or contact information for the board, and even the Artist himself. The Pastor failed to so, and brought his issues up in front of Customers. It was not until after his tirade did he speak with our General Manager. The Pastor behaved rudely, with over much brevity in his actions, with no respect to the people who were simply enjoying a quiet morning in the cafe'. His desire to be heard and make his point clearly could just as easily been accomplished with a little discretion on his part.
He was attempting to make a public spectacle of the whole thing, which he did. He shamed the Coop, The Artist, Himself, and his parish.
I am ashamed Mike, believe me. Freedom of speech has failed. So will freedom of religion. I am avvery spiritual myself, but am not Christian of any denomination, my faith has nothing to do with Abrahamic of literature or dogma. Though I feel if this very same Pastor discovered that a Heathen works at the coop, he will not respect my beliefs, badger me to convert, and even go so far as to demand I leave the coop to preserve Leveretts "Christian Purity". I have no hatred harbored towards any other faith, but I fear that others do, and may see me as an offense to the community.
I am ashamed, I am outraged, I am hurt, and I am confused. The complete lack of understanding and communication is the true disgrace here, it is the true aberration that is subverting not just the issue at hand, but the community itself.
Though I commend Adrian, that through his own Grace, he managed to preserve some of the honor of all involved. His understanding regarding the whole issue has been the one saving grace of this entire convoluted mess.
I recently read in the Recorder about the CO-OP Taking down a painting from their gallery due to complaints from a local woman who came in with her Pasteur and claimed to have been "traumatized" by it. The painting in question was a representation of Jesus being eaten by a lion. Now I had seen this painting and was struck by its beauty. Would the woman rather have it replaced with the usual image of Jesus nailed by his hands and feet to planks of wood while being speared in the gut by a Roman centurion? I am a very spiritual person and am baffled by this. I am surprised and disappointed by the CO-OPs decision to bow to one persons interpretation of a work of art. This action scares me deeply, as in Leverett has always in my mind represented a very open-minded, tolerant community. For years I have been planning on buying land and moving to Leverett, but I am ashamed of this type of gross ignorance. I would expect to see this sort of thing happening in the Bible belt, but not in Leverett Ma. Shame on you..
