Why Membership is Important
Like any business, the Co-op needs additional equity to make store improvements and expand its product line. By becoming a member, you help make your co-op better through your investment. In exchange, you receive member benefits. Members also elect the governing board, vote on major policy issues, and have the opportunity to serve on the board and sub-committees.
Here’s How to Become a Member
Tell the cashier that you would like to become a member. To keep your membership current, you must purchase 3 or more shares annually at $10 each, until a total equity investment of 17 shares ($170) is reached. This investment is refundable within 90 days of providing the Village Co-op with your written request, so if you leave the area you may cash in your shares. Meanwhile, the money has been working for both you and the Co-op.
In addition to the benefits of supporting the on-going operations of the Co-op, members receive an additional discount on pre-order purchases, can participate in the propane purchase plan, are eligible for membership in the UMassFive Credit Union, and may receive a general purchase rebate on previous year’s purchases (depending on the Co-op’s profit levels). For more information, enquire at the store.
